Symbolic Execution has never made much sense to me, even after reviewing a number of papers for my co-worker that relied on this idea. I understood what it did and why it’s important, but I still didn’t feel completely comfortable with it. It finally clicked for me while I was reading a paper titled, “Generalized Symbolic Execution for Model Checking and Testing“. If you’ve had trouble getting your head wrapped around this topic, give this paper a try. Read sections 3 and 2 first, and then have a go at the whole thing.
